What a nice description. As an trainer told me, 'don't let the reins go, push the horse out so he takes the reins away from you'.

What Does the Dressage Term "Long and Low" Mean?

Lots of riders seem to be confused by the dressage term “long and low” . Some riders even think long and low is different from the stretchy circle in the dressage tests.

Long and low is the SAME as what’s being asked for stretchy circles. The stretchy circles were added to the dressage tests to check that the horse’s connection was correct and that the rider wasn’t fudging things by fiddling with the reins.

To get correct long and low, your horse must be connected over his back. So give the co… Continue

Rearing, Bucking or Lazy Horses Need to be Taught to "Think Forward"

Rearing, bucking, nappiness as well as needing “a lot of leg” are all symptoms of your horse not going forward. Many people think that forward only means going forward over the ground. That’s the physical expression of forward. That is, going forward is a direction in the same way that going sideways is a direction.

But having your horse “think forward” is even more important if you want a horse that’s safe and not exhausting to ride. There are 2 aspects to this concept of “thinking forward.”… Continue

My Dressage Horse is Stiff to the Right

You can help your stiff dressage horse bend better by gently doing the opposite of what he wants to do with his body.

Few horses are ambidextrous—meaning they can bend as easily to the right as to the left. So your goal is to make your dressage horse’s soft side more “stiff” and his stiff side more “soft” and bendable.

How Do I Make the Stiff Side “Softer”?
Dressage riders tend to think that the stiff side is the “bad” side because it feels harder for them to bend their horses when that… Continue

Hi Jane. Many thanks for getting in touch and your support of the anti-Rollkur campaign.

I recently did a call about the issue with Klaus Ferdinand Hempfling over at http://www.DressageDisgrace.com and have another call coming up this weekend on the topic with Carolyn Resnick.

It would be great to be able to get you on a call too sometime, especially as you are so well known in dressage circles. Is this something you would consider?

It would be great to meet you anyway having also come across you via Jeff Walker. In fact, I saw Jeff speaking a couple of weeks ago and he still refers to it as 'ballet for horses' and openly admits to calling it dress-idj (not sure how one would spell his pronunciation!) in the beginning. LOL.

I look forward to hearing from you and apologies for the delay in replying.
Best wishes

Mark

Hi Jane - I have your Freedom from Fear tapes and they are just awesome! My worst fear was what might happen on a trail ride. I've used several of your techniques and today we went out on a hack with no prep work. My horse (5 year old QH gelding) and I led (which I never liked to do) and he was great. I knew he would be but I had to get my self relaxed enough to let him be as good as he can be!! Thanks so much!

Hi, Jane! How have you been? What is the best way to calm down my new 7 yr old mare? She is a rescue, a friend gave her to me. She is afraid if two or more men approach her, but is fine with one. She is usually calm, but once she is hyped up she is unreachable and unteachable for hours. She can run circles around a huge arena forever and still not be tired or worn out. She is a pale grey/white registered Pinto half-Arab. My grandkids can ride her bareback in my paddock without incident. It is when she is somewhere besides home she sometimes gets worried. She is very gentle, smart and beautiful. But like some Arabs , once she gets hyped up,it is whoa, babeeee!! Any advice on how I should work with her to help her? I have had her for 2 weeks. I plan to keep her forever and maybe do endurance with her in the future. She is 7 years old. Thanks, Jane!

Hi Jane,

Just wanted to thank you for your work at the Osgoode clinic - I was there auditing and managed to take a whole notebook of notes! Better than that, your suppling exercises are FANTASTIC and have changed my entire way of riding. Would you believe that now I can even "feel" where there's resistance - at the poll, neck, shoulder, withers OR hip? Although I always "knew" about these things, I now can feel them and better yet, have concrete techniques to work through them. It's completely changed my horses - physically and mentally - and that was just from AUDITING! Many many thanks!

Hi Jane,

Thank you for the weblink. I've been looking on your links page to see where it is and can't seem to find it. I usually represent the company name as: Equifitt.com Equestrian Fitness. I could send a logo if that were needed. Sincerely, Heather Sansom

ps. Dressage Today liked the piece with Ruth and the Equicizer, but I don't know when they will publish. I'll keep you both informed.

your book, "That Winning Feeling" has changed my life. It was recommended at a barrel racing clinic to me over 15 years ago. I have purchased it 4 times as I keep 'lending' it to people & they fall in love too. My husband outrides with the chuckwagons & it has changed how he rides & prepares. He repeats his mantra, "Fast & Strong" when he's getting on; he re-reads it every year during racing season.

Thanks for all your wonderful incite, you've truly made my life better.

I was just wondering where I can order your book, Program your Position?
I'm riding a lot of horses for my job and I always want to improove my position and my riding as much as I can. Because some of these horses are not easy to ride, I find it difficult to keep my mind focussed on a correct position. I think your book could be very helpful to help me improove my overal position, to make me more aware of it.

And I feel honored that I am able to contact you on Barnmice!

Thank you very much,
Kind regards,
Anneke Kloosterman
