Hi. I’m am very glad you asked this question. The reason I’m using two reins instead of one is because you can so much easily control the outside (shoulder, neck and hind leg) when using two reins. This pony is very young and I don’t want to ask this of her when I’m in her back. This method of training makes sure she builds the right sort of muscles in her neck, back and legs without the disturbance or weight of a rider on her back. The harness in this film is in no way mandatory, but it’s only on because I’m in the middle of making a driving horse out of her and I want her to be comfortable in the harness, knowing it’s every move, sound and feel.
Over to the reins. The reason I put them trough the bit is simply to guide her to correct carriage, just like side reins or draw reins in this case. I find this method works so much better for the way that I like to work out my horses. Don’t get me wrong, I still lunge them, but that’s only for days when I don’t have time to ride, work them in hand or they just need a break. Or if I’m working on obedience, they are lunged in a headcollar and respond only to my voice. Wow this became very long… this video doesn’t really show the way this works properly, if you take a look at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49WlCtIPkNg you will see more, I think. (Notice that the rains are very loose, and she responds to my voice) I hope that helps? If not send me a message, and I’ll try to explain it better… my English is sort of rusty..

Is there a specific reason that you are using reins in this case and not a lunge rein? I'm very interested in knowing the purpose of this technique because I have this system I bought at an auction along with a lot of other pieces of leather and the utility box. I just never knew what to use it for.

Hi :) Well you don't have to run as much as I do here, It's sort of like lungeing, but with two reins. The Pony turned 5 this summer. :) And its a girl ;)

This is very nice, I would love to do this with my guy only I can't run with him :(
How old is the Pony? His star and stripe are similar to my horse.
