Diffuculty in Transporting Frozen, cooled, embro tranfer over the Boarder? I am slightly confused as to what is going on.

Yesterday the Cdn Food Inspection Agency further tightened restrictions on equine imports to Canada. Not only are there more rigorous requirements for health certification for ALL horses (and continued restrictions on importing/transporting horses from Florida to Canada), but the import of either frozen or fresh semen, or equine embryos, will become increasingly difficult / costly effective Jan. 26.
Now people are making breeding plans, bidding on stallion auctions etc - and many Canadian breeders have paid contracts for 2009 breedings to US-based stallions. I do hope stallion owners will be able to address this issue - either allowing contracts to be postponed, or refunding monies - or perhaps a more creative solution.
A real bummer for Canadian breeders (although we have more magnificent stallions residing up here than we did a few years ago), whether they already have paid commitments or not!
Any ideas???

Staring Jan 26, 2009, there will be NO semen, frozen, fresh or
otherwise, or embryos, allowed to import into Canada without USDA vet
declaration that it is of USA origin.
Of course this impacts those of us who buy European frozen semen through
USA, as in- we wont be able to do so anymore.

I took this off another forum on www.wwwarmbloods.com

So basically we will not be able to buy our semen from US distributers unless the US distributers import the semen direct from Europe to Canada and don't stop in the US. One distributer is planning to bring in a bunch of frozen and place them in Alberta and Quebec. So we can still benefit from that.

It could be due to that virus that has been going around in the US, and the breeding/semen is how it is transferred. It is too bad, since I'm looking at stallions now too, but will be avoiding out of country to avoid any issues/delays in these shipments.

Thanks for your comment and suggestions sic2. I used to be that weak, and I even got myself two dressage whips thinking about using them as you describe. Fortunately I was then put on hot-bloods (TB, Arabs, & Arab-Welsh), and I was able to develop...
