Great Idea, I'd like to learn about equine massage. January is better for me. It would depend on the which day of the week, as to whether days or evenings are better. Laura Coffey

No, I did not think you rode starving horses. With some of my horses I just fed hay in the summer, just a handful or two of oats to put salt in. Fat, sassy, and almost too much energy, but I never let my horses get fat. I also severely limited grazi…

LOL. Jackie, wha'ts wrong, do you think our horses are starving with their hips and ribs sticking out because they aren't fed grain, LOL!!!! We're actually fighting the battle of the bulge! We're struggling to keep these horses from looking like th…

NO GRAIN? WOW. How much timothy hay do you feed for the weight of the horse? I once read an old fashioned horseman who said that when all the new ideas worked their way out that horsemen would go back to timothy hay and good, clean oats. I agree abo…

Whooo! That sounds like an awful lot of feed! For Laura, I think the best thing is to get a trainer or instructor watch how you work the horse and make suggestions of things to change. Under what circumstance did he run through a fence? That sugge…

All of this is indeed great advise. Unfortunately I have tried everything except the clicker training. In answer to is he hot ,or is he disobedient, the answer yes. In the past several months he has become far more pliable( thanks in part to you fol…

Slc2 has outlined a very good course of action for your hot little horse. I believe particularly that we overfeed our horses. I own a boarding barn where we feed grass hay, pelleted (non-sweet) feed usually Purina Horseman's Edge and turn out every…

I have to agree with slc2. This is a good opportunity to work through his issues. If he's Aced, he won't learn a thing. I've never had any luck with herbals. I have had a small amount of success using Regu-mate on my gelding. Unfortunately, it's ext…

I haven't ever seen any herbals actually work. Also, they aren't as regulated as medications, and are sold as 'food supplements' rather than medicines, which is what they actually are (the word 'drug' actually means 'dried leaves' and originally ref…

You are correct. I believe my horse is "relaxed" when he "gives his back", or his back moves softly up and down as he moves. I achieve this on the lunge line and don't proceed to further work unless I get it. Laura

Hi, Laura:

The fall's been very late finishing, which means that everyone's been riding hard much later this year. I was away teaching a clinic for 4 days, and I leave again on Friday morning to teach another. After that I'm home for a little while, with probably fewer lessons at home. Things have just been super busy - good, but really busy.

I'm also supposed to be writing a coaching workbook for Para Equestrian coaches, which I'd planned on finishing by December 1. Needless to say, it's not yet done, but we're in for a cold snap so I may get it done early next week if I'm not riding due to the cold.

Whenever I'm offline for a period of time it's because I'm away, and I often don't have access to a computer - it's never because I'm ignoring Barnmice!

I'm hoping one of my clients gets on the Canadian Para Team for WEG (I've got 4 - 5 of them trying for it), in which case I'll get to Lexington in October - how about you?
