Cheers Frank! My granddad was a jockey. He rode Thoroughbreds in Miami in the early half of the 20th century. I never got to talk to him about it much. My parents were none too keen on me taking up an equestrian career, least of all on the track. ...

I'm so sorry. You must be devastated. I'd throw in some uplifting platitude, but you're probably sick of hearing it.

Is she paying board? If she's paying for all of the horse's care, keep and equipment, I wouldn't charge anything on top of that. Make sure you have an airtight contract drawn up by a lawyer. Letting a horse leave your barn can be a dodgy business.

Well said. The quality of footing couldn't be more important. I moved my gelding to a new barn recently in search of better footing. The turf arena we were working in was not only lumpy, bumpy and full of rocks, it was dangerous. It's rained a lot...

If you're in the U.S., you can get Cod Liver Oil at the GNC. I've fed Cod Liver Oil before. It's got quite a lot of Vitamins A & E. I would put more confidence in the feeding of it than in the topical application of it, or any other oil.

Sharon Foley has a lovely book called Getting to Yes. Alexandra Kurland also has many books and videos. Karen Pryor has a good website dedicated to clicker training in general. You can pull a lot off of Google and YouTube, but nothing beats a DVD ...

Clicker training is always fun. I don't know how much he can move, but targeting doesn't require much motion. You can teach him to pick something up and hand it to you, or even to eagerly take his wormer or a bit.

Funny you should mention the weight overload on the left legs. The past couple of days I've been experimenting with different weight distributions. I've found that I can get a left bend much easier if I ride a little to the outside. We spent a goo...

We're having arena problems here too. Please be careful. A couple of weeks ago I went riding in what I thought was a dry enough turf arena. There was still enough moisture under the surface to cause my horse to lose his footing and we both ended u...

With an inexperienced horse, do you find it's easier to work on lateral movements a little each day, or a little every few days? I don't want to tax his good will, but I do want to make progress.

Thanks folks! I can see this is going to be fun already.
Admin, I'm not yet expert with it. I would love to participate in some discussions though. I've been using clicker for about three months now. It really was a last resort after I realized I was in over my head with a rescue horse. (He's coming along very nicely now that we can communicate.) I'll put a shout out on the clickryder yahoo group. Some of those folks are expert and I know they love to share their knowledge. Jane Savoie just interviewed two of them for her site, Sharon Foley and Dolores Arste.

Hey Kinny, right after I left you a message, I noticed that you do clicker training. Are you expert at it? I thought it might be fun to do a little series on the philosophy and training ideas for our community and was wondering if any of our members knew anything about it!
