Hey Barney: The what to expect in a farrier has some stutters in it. Don't forget I am expecting a video between you and one of the barefoot horse trimmers. That would be a dandy. See you soon! Gail.

Do you recommend that farriers be a member of the Ontario Farrier's Association or other provincial farrier assocations (or The American Farrier Association)? Is this a sign that the farrier is up to date with current educational news and advancemen…

I was glad to see the info on keeping the foot in shape between farrier visits. I have a rasp but did not know what to do with it. Cheers! Gail. See you Friday at Leslie's Sept.18!

Hi Barney,
I have been trimming hooves for about 35 years, mostly my horses. Due to my MS I can no longer 1) hold the horse's hoof between my legs or over my knee (I'm too weak & unsteady, or 2) use the nippers because my hands are too weak to do it one handed. I am now just using the rasp and hoof knife between farrier visits. Could you please do a video of helpful hints for weaklings like me?
Thanks, Jackie

Glad to see you're on the blog. I have a 16 yr old TH (never raced); he is just on the down side of a 6 wk abscess; the farrier and I are waiting for it to "blow"; he says it will probably blow out the coronet band; how soon can someone ride after an abscess --- as of last weekend he was still somewhat lame at the trot although was able to work out some of it....any thoughts? Thanks! Margaret

Hi,
I have donkeys and their feet are so different than horses! One has no heel and the other one gets too much heel and the front. Any tips for the heel less one? Thanks

Hi!
Do you have any suggestions for helping a horse go barefoot? I have an OTT Standardbred that I am retraining to saddle. I've had him since last September, and he is still very sensitive on gravel.

What type of trim is the best for that? I ask because the last time my farrier was out my gelding was more sore than usual. I checked his trim and the walls of the hoof were extremely beveled, so it seemed that his sole was the only thing in contact with the ground.

My gelding is six, and healthy otherwise.

Thanks.

Looking forward to reading your responses!

Hello!
I do have a question about horse hooves. I live in Michigan. This year we have gone back and forth from VERY WET to VERY DRY all spring. Not much in between. Most of the horses where I board are barefoot. Most of them are having problems chipping more then I'd consider normal. Even the horses that are eating special supplements for their hoofs are having problems.
Do you recommend some type of topical treatment?
Also, do you have any information or experience with the rounding rasps that are being sold as a good thing to use in between trims?
Sounds like a great idea to nip/file things off before they have a chance to worsen. But, I know that some things that sound great in theory aren't so great in reality.
Looking forward to the information that you provide to those of us on BarnMice....great group!
