Another idea you could try is some no stirrup work with you and this horse. It strengthens up your leg, and allows him to get use to ground poles and take off points. I had this problem with my old horse, especially over big jumps. Holding onto the mane is a great idea too!

Kathleen, (and Lauren) try holding the mane when you go over the jumps. Getting left behind is usually a personal balance thing, and gradually you will get the feel of it on your own. When you do get left behind, if you are holding his mane, at least you won't be hauling on his mouth.

heyy, i just started riding an ex-jumper that has had some time off and hes really speedy. hes an amazing jumper and usually gets perfect spots but sometimes he takes a major long spot and im not ready, and i get left behind. does any one have any tips on how NOT to get left behind when your jumping? i find it happens to me with the really big jumps too which is even worse :P

Hi, thnks for joining the group!
My horse had the same problem to but my coach helped me through it, some tips r first of all get the flat right! and when ur coming up to the jump back sit back and wait and about a stride away u can let him go and to help with that put a pole a stride or two away from the jump to know when to let him go. usually horses race cause there not confident jumping yet (mabye there not really in shape yet) so ur gelding is probobly not that confident yet and u just have to ride him regularly and work on geting him to wait coming up to jump, but u have to remenber to let go so he can make it over the jump. Also a good exercise is doing bouces (3-4 jumps with just enough room for the horse to puch himself over the next jump, ask ur coach for the striding of a bounce to know exactly) cause then he'll have to slow down more to make it over the jumps and the first time he'll probobly try to race through it but he'll relize soon that that he has to go slower and watch his feet to make it over the jump. You should ask ur coach about all this since i don't know the horse but thats some stuff u can try, hope i helped

How nice of you to ask "How is everyone today" Marti. I agree with Shirley - the right medication and time with horses helps. They have been a natural feedback loop to help me relax in the saddle. If I tense up the horses do too. If I "force mysel...
